WRITING FOR CHOIR
Choral music occupies a central place in my compositional practice. Approximately half of my acoustic works are written for voice and choir. I am drawn to the expressive possibilities of the human voice and the unique sense of collective listening that choral singing creates. Writing for choir allows me to explore the relationship between language, sound, and shared musical experience. In recent years, my choral works have been commissioned and performed by ensembles including Tallis Vocalis, and continue to form an important strand of my artistic output.
Elegy 1766: A Contemporary Reflection on Alonso Lobo's "Versa est in luctum"
Drawing inspiration from Lobo's intricate polyphony and emotive harmonies, this contemporary reflection weaves a narrative that echoes the melodic motifs and emotional resonance of its predecessor.
Through a fusion of traditional harmony and modern rhythm and melody writing, the piece delves into the universal theme of mourning and consolation with a fresh interpretation of the Latin text. It expresses emotions that range from sorrow to anger, from longing to transcendence, carrying fragments of Lobo's legacy.
As the music unfolds, it invites introspection and contemplation, encouraging audiences to confront their own experiences of loss and renewal. In this performance, we invite you to join us on a journey through the depths of sorrow and the promise of resilience, as we pay homage to the legacy of Alonso Lobo while embracing lost: the deep feeling of loss is often a testament to the profound depth of love.
