Knowless (2024-25)

Alma Redemptoris Mater

Alma Redemptoris Mater, one of the four Marian antiphons, is traditionally a prayer of devotion and supplication to the Virgin Mary. In this contemporary setting, however, the piece reimagines the mother-daughter relationship in a modern context, exploring complexities far beyond the customary trust and plea for maternal care. Here, the music portrays underlying confusion, hesitation, and emotional turbulence.

Structurally, the piece unfolds as a single, extended musical phrase, composed of interweaving unsettled rhythmic motifs. These rhythmic patterns create a continuous sense of movement, propelling the music toward the climactic miserere section. The final plea, typically understood as a call for divine mercy, is transformed into an outpouring of yearning—expressing not only a desire for compassion but also an eruption of anger and deep emotional anguish. The result is an exploration of conflict within this sacred bond.
